WRECK DIVE
The Salem Express was a roll-on/roll-off passenger ferry that operated for 25 years, with many different owners, names, and regular routes at that time. The boat was originally named Fred Scamaroni, In 1988 it was sold to Samatour Shipping Company, Suez, Egypt, and renamed the Salem Express; its scheduled route was between Suez and Jeddah. On its final voyage, the Salem Express sailed her usual 450-mile journey from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to Safaga, Egypt, which took around 36 hours; they intended to unload 350 passengers, before continuing then sailing north to Suez. This route had been the ship’s standard schedule since 1988. The ship’s departure had been delayed by two days in Saudi Arabia due to a mechanical fault. The night of the sinking was stormy. The wreck lies off Port Safaga, Hyndman Reef at a depth of 32m on the sea floor, and 12m to the side of the wreck. Visibility is usually very good; current is usually light and there’s plenty of sea life.
Hazards include sharp jagged metal, an overhead environment, some areas with a wire that could cause entanglement, and the usual dangerous fish species you don’t want to bump into such as lionfish, stone fish, etc. The ship can be entered at many points, and its recent sinking means it is comparatively intact, and growing corals. It is known for its large number of well-preserved artifacts in the debris field and within the ship, including luggage and passenger items: “rolls of carpet, portable stereos, even bicycles and pushchairs and lifeboats on the sea bed. Some divers emphasize the importance of not interfering with the site as a way to treat it with respect.

NIGHT DIVE
Night diving is a very special experience and a must at least once on your diving holiday.
Discover what weird and wonderful creatures come out at night. Find parrotfish fast asleep in their protective spit bubbles, marvel over tiny sets of shrimp’s eyes catching your torchlight, see corals transform as polyp colonies wave their hairy bodies about actively feeding on plankton, spot tiny cuttlefish on the move, and always remember to wave your arms around and watch the tiny zooplankton light up all around you.
Why not try a night dive in the Red Sea and experience a different kind of nightlife?
You could dive into your favorite reef during daily hours till you think you know every square inch of it, but a night dive at that same will reveal a whole new world. It will show you the same place from an entirely different perspective; one with intense color and with marine life that comes to life at night. If you’ve ever wondered what happens underwater after the sun goes down, sign up for Night Diver Specialty courses or adventures.

ELPHINSTONE REEF
Elphinstone Reef is one of the world’s most exciting diving destinations. A few small breakers are the only visible sign that just below the sea’s surface is the summit of a subterranean mountain, rich in colorful corals and fish species, and attracting the interest of hungry barracuda, dolphins and sharks.
It is two shark species in particular that attract divers looking for that unique once in a life-time close-quarters encounter with a big sea predator. The scarily curious oceanic whitetip and the oddly shaped hammerhead.
This is one of the few places where divers can regularly come eyeball to eyeball with these feared but fascinating animals. The whitetip is categorized as vulnerable to extinction by the World Conservation Union and the hammerhead one level worse at endangered.
However these encounters are only for highly experienced advanced divers – not primarily because of the sharks who do not actively seek out human prey – but due to the reef’s location in the open-sea, its’ alluring but dangerously deep coral plateaus and caves and its’ infamous and constantly changing currents.
ARE THERE ANY DANGEROUS SEA CURRENTS ?
The sea currents are variable and usually (but not always) run from North to South. They are often quite strong – two knots or greater – and this can benefit those skilled in drift diving as they can start with a dive off the northern point, which is possibly the most likely location for shark encounters, and go with the flow southwards along the reef and have the boat meet them at the southern end.
However the currents necessitate careful consideration and your guide should be prepared to adjust your diving plans according to any unusual changes in the current that he may notice. This is important as this reef is fully exposed to the open sea with nowhere to shelter.
